Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.” – Dean Koontz, author of “Whispers”

Ladies and gentlemen, pups and people of all ages—let us introduce you to our October Pup of the Month! The one and only, endlessly energetic, ridiculously smart, sofa-snuggling superstar… SCOUT!

When Scout found out he would be our newest featured pup, he bounced in raring to go and said “I thought this was an agility course. But hey, I love a good chat just as much as a good sprint. Let’s do this!”

So hold on to your leashes because this guy is not your average pup. He’s got the brains of a rocket scientist, the energy of a double espresso, and the cuddles of a weighted blanket. We hope you’re ready!

SDC: Hello! We’re so happy to meet you.

Scout: I am so ready for this. Is this where I tell everyone how amazing I am and ask if they have snacks?

SDC: Basically, yes. But let’s start with something serious. How did you come to be part of our rescue?

Scout: Ah, my origin story! So picture this—I’m out in Cleveland, Texas, just me, the wind, and a lot of empty space. Not the safest place for a dog, honestly. Lots of pups get dumped out there, and unfortunately, I was one of them. Luckily, I wandered onto this kind woman’s property. She gave me some food, saw I was a good boy with nowhere to go, and called in the rescue pros. Boom! I traded in stray life for second chances. Not a bad upgrade.

SDC: You’ve come a long way since then. What’s life been like post-rescue?

Scout: Oh, it’s been awesome. I’ve been busy—learning, playing, making friends, and working hard to become the best version of me. I’ve got this huge heart, big dreams, and a mind that needs to stay busy. I’m talking brain games, puzzle toys, training drills… give me a job, and I’ll give you 110%.

SDC: You definitely do. Now, let’s clear up the mystery—how old are you?

Scout: I’m somewhere between 10 and 12 months old, which means I’m still basically a big ol’ puppy in a slightly-too-powerful Malinois body. I’ve got what the professionals call “puppy brain”—tons of curiosity, very little impulse control, and an overwhelming enthusiasm for literally everything.

SDC: So you’re still learning and growing?

Scout: Absolutely! I’ve got loads of potential, but I need guidance. I’m like a sponge—super eager to learn, but I do best with structure, patience, and consistency. Basically: teach me cool stuff, and I’ll give you everything I’ve got. I need a job, and people who want to give me the right one!

SDC: You’re known for your energy and smarts, and we can see why! Give us your top three favorite things.

Scout: Only three?! Rude, but okay:

  • Training. I don’t just like to work—I crave it. Want to teach me agility, scent work, tricks, or tasks? I’m all in. I could legit be an overachiever in dog school.
  • Playtime. Fetch, tug, chase, zoomies—I love it all. Got a flirt pole? Let’s go. I’m a one-dog party machine.
  • People. All ages, all sizes—I LOVE YOU. I want to be with my humans all the time. Snuggled on the couch, trotting beside you on the trail, helping in the kitchen (aka catching crumbs).
  • Okay, I know you said three, but I’m sneaking in a 4th!… YAK CHEWS!!! Those things are BOMB!

SDC: That sounds like a full-time fun schedule. Speaking of the couch… rumor has it you’re into TV time?

Scout: Oh yeah. After a solid day of movement and mental work, I transform into a Grade-A Snuggle Champion. Turn on some TV—I’m partial to Dexter, but I’m open-minded—and let’s relax. I’ll curl right up beside you, head on your lap, all warm and cozy. Blanket? Optional. Me? REQUIRED! It’s the best way to end a day.

SDC: So you’ve got all this energy, but also a soft side. What kind of home would be your dream match?

Scout: I’m looking for my person. Someone active, patient, and down for a challenge—in the fun way! Someone who sees my energy and doesn’t think “too much”—they think “let’s go!” I want a teammate, not just an owner. Someone who gets that I need structure, enrichment, and consistency. If you’re into hiking, training, dog sports, or just finding ways to outsmart your dog (spoiler: you won’t), then we’re probably soulmates. I don’t need a Malinois “expert”, just someone eager to learn with me! Bonus points if you love spontaneous cuddle attacks.

SDC: You mentioned being dog-friendly—what kind of dog sibling would be a good fit?

Scout: Yeah, I like other dogs! But I’m still working on my social manners, so I’d do best with a confident, patient canine companion who can show me the ropes. A pup who won’t be overwhelmed by my “let’s be best friends RIGHT NOW” energy. Basically, a well-balanced fur-bro (or sis!) that can help me shine.

SDC: Any no-gos for your future home?

Scout: Cats and small critters? Not my jam. My Malinois instincts kick in, and I just get way too amped up.

SDC: What’s something people might not expect about you?

Scout: That under all this speed and energy is a big, sensitive lovebug. I’m not just drive and go—I’m connection. I bond hard with my people. I don’t love being left alone for long—I like being in the mix, part of the action, your shadow with a tail.

SDC: Last question: If your forever family is reading this right now, what would you say to them?

Scout: I’d say… I’m not looking for just a home—I’m looking for a partnership. I want someone who sees my energy and thinks “YES,” who loves a dog that’s a little wild, a little brilliant, and a whole lot loyal. If you want a best friend who will push you to get outside, make you laugh daily, challenge your brain, and then wrap you in a cuddle at the end of it all—I’m your Scout. Let’s make life an adventure.

SDC: Scout, you are absolutely one-of-a-kind. Thank you for being your bold, hilarious, brilliant self. We can’t wait to see who falls in love with you next.

Scout: Thanks! I’ll be by the door… just in case my new person is already on their way. Probably with a fetch ball, some hiking boots, and that spot on the sofa already warm and waiting!

SDC is thrilled to express gratitude for your interest in meeting our October Pup of the Month, SCOUT
